Notes on growing green jujubes

Although green jujube is a tropical fruit, it has no great requirements for growing temperature or planting time, which means it can be planted anytime and anywhere, but the best transplanting time is in March and April each year, when the survival rate is highest. So what do we need to pay attention to and take seriously when growing green jujubes? Let's take a look together below.

1. Variety selection

Judging from the current situation of green jujube cultivation, there are quite a few varieties of green jujube, so when choosing varieties we should pay attention to selecting, as far as possible, high-quality varieties with large fruit, high fruiting rate, fine and crisp flesh, small pits, strong sweetness, thin skin and strong resistance, so that the yield and quality of green jujubes will be better, and they can quickly gain a foothold in the market.

2. Field planting management

The field planting of green jujube trees requires great care and attentiveness, because only then will the survival rate of the planted green jujube trees be high, so when field planting we should pay attention to transplanting the green jujube trees together with their original base soil. The hole dug during planting should be reasonably sized, at least large enough for the roots of the green jujube tree to extend naturally. When filling in soil, pay attention to first cover the main root with fine soil, then press it lightly and firmly, and then use other soil to fill the hole. At this point you can press the soil firm with your foot, so that the root system of the field-planted green jujube tree can breathe better, and the survival rate will naturally increase.

3. Density management

Green jujube trees grow relatively well and can be used for a relatively long number of years, so from the very beginning of planting we should pay attention to planting density, which can ensure the permeability between the orchard rows. Usually we plant with a distance of cm between each row and an interval of five meters between each plant. Too high a planting density not only wastes costs, but also increases the workload of later field management.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Green jujube trees grow relatively fast, which also means they need a large amount of nutrients, so when fertilizing we need to apply fertilizer in stages, applying fertilizer reasonably according to the different periods of the green jujube tree. For example, in the young tree stage we mainly use nitrogen fertilizer to promote the growth of branches and leaves, while in the fruiting stage of the green jujube tree we mainly use potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer, supplemented with nitrogen fertilizer and boron fertilizer. At the same time, water management in the field should also be noted. During its branch and leaf growth period it needs a large amount of water, but before flowering and during fruit setting we should keep the field dry, and only start watering when the fruit has grown to the size of a thumb.

5. Pruning and shaping

Because the branches and leaves of green jujube trees grow relatively fast, we need to prune the branches and leaves of the green jujube trees irregularly to maintain a good tree shape, which is not only beneficial to field management, but can also enhance the permeability of the field and reduce damage from pests and diseases, so that high yield of green jujube trees can be guaranteed.

6. Pollination management

When planting green jujube trees, pollinator trees need to be selected well. Although some do not need interplanted pollination, in order to improve the yield and quality of green jujubes, we can make reasonable arrangements and plant pollinator trees reasonably in a herringbone pattern, so that the chance of successful pollination is greater. Secondly, during this period we also need to carry out reasonable flower and fruit thinning, which can ensure the quality of the green jujubes, and at the same time there will be no fruit drop in the later stage.
