When papayas show varying degrees of crown rot, and even lodging and plant death, it is likely stem base rot, which is more likely to occur under high temperature, frequent rain and humidity.
Control: generally use agents targeting root rot and Phytophthora blight of cucurbits and vegetables, or bactericidal agents. If diseased plants are found, dig away the soil around the neck of the diseased plant, use a sterilized bamboo strip or small knife to scrape clean the affected cortex and tissue, then apply one of the following drug formulas to the diseased part and drench the roots until the wound dries and no longer exudes gum. First, Ridomil plus ethylicin; second, each at 50-100 times dilution of Shadufan plus agricultural streptomycin (or thiazole zinc); severely affected papaya orchards should be sprayed once every 5-7 days, for 2-3 consecutive times. For plants that have recovered their vigor after healing, the wound is prone to breaking, so it is best to support and reinforce them with 1.2-1.5 m bamboo poles.
