How should strawberries be managed after harvest? Please advise
Strawberries can be managed as follows after harvest:
Remove runners. During the peak period of runner production, remove runners once about every 20 days, for 3 to 4 times in a row.
Cut leaves. To reduce runner production and increase the number of flower buds, after fruit harvest all old leaves on the aboveground part should be cut off, keeping only the young leaves just emerging from the front end of the new stem.
Fertilizer and water management. Around the Autumn Equinox, apply 20 to 25 kg of compound fertilizer as a top dressing to promote flower bud differentiation, but be careful to water less to prevent excessive stem and leaf growth. Before the soil freezes, water once with freezing water.
Cultivation and hilling. After fruit harvest, cultivate and hill the soil in time to favor new root growth; hill the soil only up to the point where the crown is exposed. Before the roots grow vigorously, cultivation can be appropriately deeper, generally 6 cm, and afterward cultivation should gradually become shallower.
Pest and disease control. For those infected with leaf spot or leaf blight, spray 1000-fold liquid thiophanate or 800-fold liquid Tuzet. For those with gray mold, spray 800-fold liquid Previcur. For underground pests such as wireworms and cutworms, use 0.5 kg of 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate, mix with 25 kg of water, and drench the roots.
Mulching. After watering with freezing water in early November, mulch with 3 to 4 cm of wheat straw or rice straw in mid-November, and remove it when growth resumes the following year.
