The amount of fertilizer absorbed by strawberries gradually increases with the progress of growth and development, and the ability to absorb fertilizer is especially strong during the fruit enlargement stage, the beginning of harvest and the peak harvest period. Therefore, appropriate topdressing should be applied during these periods.

Strawberries absorb potassium and nitrogen especially strongly throughout their life, and during the peak harvest period the amount of potassium absorbed exceeds the amount of nitrogen absorbed. Phosphorus absorption is relatively weak throughout the entire growth process.

The role of phosphorus is to promote root development, thereby increasing strawberry yield. Excessive phosphorus will reduce the glossiness of strawberries. In terms of improving strawberry quality, topdressing with potassium fertilizer and nitrogen fertilizer is more effective than topdressing with phosphorus fertilizer. Therefore, topdressing should focus mainly on nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, while phosphorus fertilizer should be applied as a base fertilizer.

Strawberries are not tolerant of fertilizer and are prone to salt concentration injury. Varieties such as Chunxiang and Baojiao Zaosheng are particularly sensitive to quick-acting chemical fertilizers. Therefore, applying large amounts of quick-acting chemical fertilizers in the base fertilizer is very risky. In addition, in forcing cultivation, applying too much base fertilizer may delay lateral flower bud differentiation, or even cause lateral flower buds to fail to differentiate and instead produce a large number of branches.
