When growing strawberries, pay attention to the following points:
    1. Choose strong seedlings
Choose disease-free seedlings that grow vigorously and have many fibrous roots. Generally, seedlings should have at least 4 leaves and a stem thickness of about 1 cm. If seedlings are purchased from a distant place, when planting, cut off the large outer leaves of the plant, leaving only 2-3 small leaves in the middle. This can reduce water evaporation from the leaves and improve the survival rate.
2. Land preparation and fertilization
Strawberry roots are relatively shallow, so choose sandy loam soil that is loose, contains more organic matter, is flat, is convenient for irrigation and drainage, and has a pH of about 5.5-6.5. Because strawberries are shade-tolerant, they can also be intercropped or relay-cropped with tall crops or young fruit trees, and are suitable for courtyard cultivation. About 15 days before planting strawberries, carry out land preparation. First spray the herbicide trifluralin, using only 200 grams per mu. Then carry out deep plowing and land preparation, plowing 30-40 cm deep. Along with plowing, apply 4000 kg of high-quality farm manure, 15 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 10 kg of potassium sulfate per mu. Finally, rake the soil fine and level to lay the foundation for making beds or ridges. When making beds, the bed length is 10-20 m, width 60-70 cm, and height 10 cm. When making ridges, the ridge width is 50-55 cm, ridge height 15 cm, and ridge furrow width 20 cm.
3. Timely planting
Autumn planting can be carried out in mid-to-late August, because temperature and humidity are relatively suitable at this time, and strawberries can quickly sprout and enter normal growth and development after planting. When cultivating on flat beds, plant 2 rows per bed, with a row spacing of 20 cm and a plant spacing of 1 cm, about 10,000 plants per mu. Leave a 30 cm walkway between two beds. When planting on ridges, plant 2 rows per ridge, with a row spacing of 20 cm and a plant spacing of 15 cm, planting 9000 seedlings per mu. Points to note when planting: it is best to choose cloudy and rainy days or sunny evenings to plant seedlings. Plant deeply without burying the crown, and plant shallowly without exposing the roots. The root crown of the seedling should be exactly level with the ground. If buried too deep, it will press the seedling's growing point, easily causing seedling rot and reducing the survival rate; if covered with too little soil, the seedlings are prone to drying out and dying because the root system is exposed. When transplanting, first dig a hole, then place the seedling into the hole so that its root system spreads out, then fill with soil and water until the seedling grows new leaves.
4. Management after planting
To make the seedlings grow and develop well after transplanting and promote flower bud formation, first, promptly remove aging leaves and stolons from the plants; second, apply a nitrogen fertilizer topdressing once in late September, with 15 kg of ammonium nitrate per mu, and appropriately apply phosphorus fertilizer as well; third, irrigate promptly, and cultivate once after each irrigation to keep the soil loose and raise soil temperature, which helps the seedlings take root.
5. Disease and pest control
During the growth and development of strawberries, gray mold, powdery mildew, and leaf spot often occur, and they are also harmed by red spiders. For the control of gray mold, generally spray 0.3 lime sulfur mixture at the early stage of the disease; for the control of powdery mildew and leaf spot, spray 800-times dilution of Tuzet or 800-1000-times dilution of thiophanate-methyl; when red spider damage occurs, spray 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1200-times dilution.
