Longan tree improvement can be carried out with reference to the following techniques:
I. Improve the soil
① Expanding holes and improving soil: dig strip-shaped trenches 40-60 cm deep, 30-40 cm wide, and 100-150 cm long at the drip line of the trunk, cutting the roots to promote new root growth.
② Do a good job of orchard supporting facilities: build orchard supporting facilities such as water storage tanks and flood control ditches to ensure the orchard is not washed away during the rainy season and has water for irrigation during the dry season;
③ Turning the soil: in winter, the soil should be turned comprehensively, to a depth of 20-40 cm. Note that near the trunk, turn shallowly or not at all, and never hoe through the roots.
II. Reasonable fertilization
Longan can be fertilized 4 times a year: in early February during the flower bud emergence stage, apply pre-flowering fertilizer, accounting for 10% of the annual fertilization amount, focusing on phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; in early June, apply fruit-swelling fertilizer, accounting for 25% of the annual fertilization amount, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, with a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer; half a month before harvest, apply pre-harvest fertilizer, accounting for 25% of the annual fertilization amount, mainly compound fertilizer; half a month after harvest, apply organic fertilizer and quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, accounting for 50% of the annual fertilization amount. At other times, foliar topdressing can be carried out multiple times, using nucleotides, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Gaomeishi, etc. alternately.
III. Pruning
Half a month after harvest, carry out major pruning, cutting off diseased and pest-damaged branches, dead branches, overly dense branches, etc., and properly retract other branches, cutting off some large branches to reduce internal consumption in the tree.
IV. Pest and disease control
There are many kinds of pests and diseases harming longan, among which pests such as the stem borer and eriophyid mite are small in body size and have overlapping generations, making control relatively difficult. Generally, pesticide can be sprayed when longan sprouts tender shoots, once every 10 days, and pesticides with strong systemic action and long efficacy such as phoxim, omethoate, and dimehypo should be selected.
