Longan witches' broom disease:
◎Disease Introduction◎
Also known as witches' broom disease. Also called bald twig disease, broom disease, huya, leprosy disease, tiger ear and mute disease, etc. It is distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang and Taiwan, China and other provinces (autonomous regions). This disease causes serious damage in Fujian. The damage in Guangdong and Guangxi is lighter than in Fujian. The flower clusters and branch tips of diseased trees grow abnormally, and the flower clusters on affected branch tips cannot set fruit. The diseased trees become weak in vigor, and the yield declines year by year, with an annual yield reduction of 20%-30%. In severe cases, there is no harvest at all, and the trees eventually die.
◎Disease Symptoms◎
It mainly affects spring shoots and flower clusters. When young shoots are affected, the young leaves are narrow, pale green, and the leaf margins curl and cannot unfold; in severe cases, the entire leaf is linear and twisted. When mature leaves are affected, the petiolules of the pinnately compound leaves often become flattened and widened. The leaf blades are uneven, curled and shrunken, the leaf tips and leaf margins curl toward the underside of the leaf, and the veins are pale yellow-green (vein clearing). When viewed against the light, irregular yellow-green mottling of varying sizes can be seen between the veins. In severe cases, the leaves at the shoot tips become linear malformed leaves that cannot unfold and are smoke-brown. Sometimes a branch tip bears both malformed leaves and leaves of normal size, but the leaf surface is uneven and distinctly mottled. The leaves of diseased trees are mostly various malformed leaves and easily fall off, forming bald twigs.
