What is peach leaf curl? Please explain
Peach leaf curl mainly damages leaves, and can also damage young shoots and young fruit. The pathogen oversummers as ascospores or blastospores in the bark or bud scales, and when conditions are suitable the spores continue to bud. The blastospores overwinter in the scales and bark. It generally develops in April to May, and in that year the damage usually occurs only once. When fruit is affected it turns red, the diseased part swells, the fuzz falls off, and the surface becomes smooth.
Control methods:
(1) Agricultural control. When establishing a new peach orchard, choose varieties that are both high-yielding and high-quality as well as disease-resistant. For peach orchards that have entered the fruiting stage, manage soil, fertilizer and water well, prune and train the trees carefully, and improve ventilation and light penetration. In severely affected peach orchards, apply topdressing and irrigation in good time, and spray Guaguo Zhuangdiling to thicken the nutrient-conducting vessels, strengthen tree vigor and improve disease resistance. In April to May, in conjunction with growing-season pruning and control of peach red-necked longhorn beetle larvae, remove leaves with leaf curl immediately and burn them in a centralized manner. Spray a 1000-fold dilution of Hushu Jiangjun to sterilize and disinfect, inhibiting the spread and replication of the pathogen.
(2) Chemical control. During the dormant season, spray a 1000-fold dilution of Hushu Jiangjun to eliminate overwintering pathogens. When peach buds begin to swell in spring, this is the key period for controlling peach leaf curl; spray a 1000-fold dilution of Hushu Jiangjun, or a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder, or a 1000-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim suspension concentrate. During the peach growing season from March to June, that is, after leaf expansion and before hot, dry weather arrives, you can use thiophanate-methyl or carbendazim together with Xingao Zhimo, which can retain heat and moisture and enhance efficacy. In the early stage of leaf curl, the lesions are about 0.2 cm in diameter; when a fungicide is sprayed, the lesions are markedly suppressed.
