Growing strawberries at home is popular right now, since you can both eat the strawberries and enjoy them as ornamentals. Zhongdiwang has put together the potted strawberry growing method, listed in detail below for readers to refer to.

Step one, choosing the pot and the strawberry variety:
For potted strawberries, choose a pot with a mouth diameter of 20-30 cm, such as a clay pot or plastic pot. Use fertile, well-drained soil for the potting mix, and add rotted chicken manure or soybean cake as a base fertilizer.

For home growing, it is best to use everbearing varieties, so they keep fruiting and you always have berries to eat. Good potted everbearing varieties include ELAN, Baor, climbing AR, climbing H, and Seva. They can bloom and fruit several times a year. Single-season varieties also work, but the fruiting period is short, though the berries taste excellent, for example the Japanese cream strawberry Zhangji, Hongyan and others.

        Step two, planting the strawberries:
The best time to pot them is spring or autumn, when they establish well. Choose sturdy seedlings, lift them with plenty of soil around the roots, remove old and damaged leaves, and trim the roots to about 10 cm. Let the roots spread out and plant them into the potting soil.
When planting, press the soil firm and make the base of the crown level with the soil surface. If planted too deep, the crown is buried and the seedling easily rots; if planted too shallow, the new stem is exposed and easily dries out. After planting, water thoroughly, place in a shady spot for 3-5 days, then move to a spot with plenty of light.

Step three, care after planting the strawberries:
Water plays an important role in strawberry growth. After planting, be sure to keep the potting soil moist but not dry, watering little and often so the plants grow strong. After the seedlings recover, water with diluted soybean cake water about every half month until flower buds appear. When watering, pour slowly from below the leaves to keep the leaves clean and attractive.

Step four, care during the flowering and fruiting period of strawberries:
In late October, spray gibberellin once to promote flower bud differentiation. After buds appear, thin flowers and fruit in time. Remove small, rotten, diseased and deformed flowers and fruit, as well as side shoots growing from the leaf axils, and remove old and diseased leaves to increase ventilation and light penetration.

Strawberries love light, so give them plenty of sunlight, otherwise the plants grow vigorously but bloom sparsely. After strawberries sprout in early spring, apply liquid fertilizer once every 10 days, and before flowering apply fertilizer and water even more diligently, keeping the soil moist; only with enough fertilizer and water will there be many flowers and large fruit and fewer useless flowers.

During the growing season, promptly remove dead leaves, diseased leaves and weak side shoots, and also clean up unwanted runners and young plants in time. When the fruit ripens in May-June, red berries and green leaves set each other off beautifully. But when watering during the fruiting period, take care to keep the berries clean; after flowering you can lay kraft paper underneath to separate the drooping fruit from the soil.
