How to plant red-fleshed kiwifruit

The most distinctive difference between red-fleshed kiwifruit and ordinary kiwifruit is that its flesh is red. Its nutritional value is very high, and its vitamin C content far exceeds that of other fruits, earning it the titles of "vitamin C fruit" and "king of fruits". Its medicinal value is also gradually being developed, market demand is growing, and its price is very considerable. The planting area is also becoming wider and wider, so the editor below brings you the planting methods for red-fleshed kiwifruit. Let's take a look.

1. Site selection and trellis building

The red-fleshed kiwifruit orchard should be chosen in a location with relatively convenient transportation, sufficient water sources, sunny and ventilated conditions, and relatively high humidity. The soil must be loose, rich in nutrients, and well-aerated sandy soil, or mountain land rich in humus. Red-fleshed kiwifruit is mostly supported by flat-topped greenhouse trellises. Existing tree stumps on the mountain land can be used as fixed posts for the trellis, and some artificially made stone posts can be added. Concrete is used to secure key parts. The trellis should be 1.5-2 m high, with iron wires crisscrossing to form a frame for the vines to grow on.

2. Fertilizing and watering

Fertilization should be determined according to the variety, soil conditions, surrounding weather, temperature and humidity, and a series of other conditions. When planting, apply an appropriate amount of fruit tree fertilizer into each planting hole. During the young tree stage, fertilization should be applied frequently and in small amounts, with at least three large-scale fertilizations each year. After harvest in winter, apply base fertilizer, with each plant receiving a mixed fertilizer of 40 jin of organic fertilizer and 3 jin of compound fertilizer. After budding, apply the first topdressing. During the peak growth period, apply the second topdressing. Fruit tree fertilizer or compound fertilizer can be used for topdressing. When fertilizing, be careful not to burn the roots. In dry seasons, remember to water frequently, and do not let red-fleshed kiwifruit lack water, which would affect its growth and development.

3. Shaping and fruit thinning

Later plant shaping should be carried out according to the previous trellis method, using the trellis surface to distribute the kiwifruit branches evenly. Winter pruning is carried out from after leaf fall in winter to the beginning of budding in early spring. Properly shorten the branches, keep the main vines and fruiting mother branches, and cut off all large branches that are too densely grown, thin and weak branches with poor growth, and diseased and pest-damaged branches. Summer pruning is carried out around June, and sprouts on the main trunk should be removed in time to leave space for the branches and vines. Generally, keep one fruit for every 4-5 leaves, and keep 1-2 fruits about every 20 cm.

4. Disease control

The main diseases of red-fleshed kiwifruit are anthracnose, damping-off, root rot, and many other pathogenic diseases caused by fungi and bacteria. Many diseases not only harm stems and leaves, but also have a great impact on the fruit. Different control methods should be used for different diseases. For example, to prevent and control anthracnose, carbendazim can be sprayed at budding time for prevention. Its main pests include cutworms, scarab beetles, and others. The eggs of these pests and diseases overwinter attached to the soil or diseased plant residues, and germinate in spring to harm kiwifruit. After harvest, the soil should be disinfected in time and diseased residues should be cleaned up to reduce sources of disease.

The storage time and quality of red-fleshed kiwifruit are closely related to the maturity of the kiwifruit at harvest. Harvesting the fruit too early or too late will have a great impact on the final quality and taste of the fruit. Therefore, when finally harvesting red-fleshed kiwifruit, be sure to pay attention to the appropriate harvest time. A period of storage after harvest will make the kiwifruit more mature and improve its taste. To learn more related information, please continue to follow Qinnong Network!
