What are the environmental requirements for growing pineapple?
Pineapple is a common tropical fruit that originated in Brazil and was introduced to Guangdong, China, in the 16th century. Today it is widely grown in Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan, Taiwan, China, and other places, with an extremely large annual output. As a tropical fruit, pineapple cannot adapt to a wide range of growing environments and does have certain requirements for growing conditions. Let's take a look below at Qinnong.com's overview of the environmental requirements for growing pineapple.

1. Soil requirements
Pineapple has strong adaptability to soil, but its root system is relatively shallow, so the growing soil should preferably be loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil or mountainous red soil. Heavy clay soil with poor drainage is not suitable. It also has one strict soil requirement, namely pH: pineapple prefers acidic soil and dislikes neutral and alkaline soil, which can cause poor growth. The suitable soil pH is between 4 and 5.5.
2. Temperature requirements
Since it is a tropical fruit, it naturally prefers warm and humid zones. The optimum growing temperature is 15-40°C. Below 15°C, growth slows; below 10°C, growth stops; and below 5°C, it suffers cold damage. It has different temperature requirements at each growth stage. When planting suckers, the temperature should be kept at around 23°C to promote sprouting, along with appropriate shading. The optimum temperature for root growth is around 30°C. If it is above 40°C or below 5°C, growth stops. In winter, attention should be paid to insulation measures to prevent cold damage.
3. Light requirements
Pineapple originated in tropical rainforest regions and can tolerate partial shade, but when grown artificially it must receive sufficient light duration so that it grows well, accumulates sugar quickly, and produces high yield and quality. If light is insufficient, growth and development are poor, sweetness is low, acidity is high, and quality is relatively poor. Generally, a 20% reduction in light leads to a 10% reduction in yield. Although it needs sufficient light, during high summer temperatures with intense sunlight, the leaves can be sunburned and become discolored, and the fruit is also prone to sunburn, so attention should be paid to shading and sun protection.
4. Water requirements
Pineapple has extremely strong drought tolerance, but it still needs a certain amount of water during the growth stage. It is suitable for growing in areas with annual rainfall of 500-2800mm, and the main growing areas in China can all meet its water needs. It can regulate itself: when water is lacking, it reduces transpiration to decrease water consumption; when severely short of water, the leaves change from green to red-yellow, at which point watering and irrigation are needed to prevent the plant from dying. In areas with heavy rain, however, excessive soil water accumulation makes the plant prone to disease and root rot, so drainage should be carried out promptly after heavy rain.
The above are the environmental requirements for growing pineapple brought to you by Qinnong.com. Pineapple is mainly grown in Hainan and the coastal areas of Guangdong and Fujian. These areas have typhoons year-round, so protective measures should be taken during cultivation to prevent plants from being blown over, fruit stalks from being broken, and leaves from being twisted and snapped by excessively strong winds.
