How to Increase Hami Melon Yields

In recent years, many places in China have begun growing Hami melons, but the highest yields and the best quality still come from Hami melons produced in ** region. However, the yield still cannot meet market demand, so trial plantings have also been carried out in many places, but the results have not been particularly satisfactory. So how should they be grown to increase Hami melon yields? Below are some methods for increasing Hami melon yields compiled by Qinnong.com.

1. Sow at the Right Time

To increase Hami melon yields, we need to take the timing factor into account, because Hami melons perform differently in different periods, and the melons they can produce also differ greatly. Therefore, sowing at the right time is very necessary. The usual sowing time is set in winter, preferably in January, because Hami melons still need to go through a long seedling-growing period before setting fruit. At this time, conditions are most suitable for the growth of the melon seedlings, allowing them to enter the fruit-setting stage more quickly.

2. Growing Conditions

To grow any crop, we first need to consider the conditions it needs for growth. So what conditions are suitable for growing Hami melons? Generally, we should choose land for crop rotation, but it must not have previously grown melons or fruits. Next, the soil fertility must be sufficient, and the soil moisture content of the planting site must not be too high, but it also cannot be completely without moisture. Finally, the temperature needs to be kept above 15 degrees, preferably around 20 to 28 degrees, so we can build greenhouses to regulate the temperature while also doing a good job of heat dissipation.

3. Reasonable Density

Because Hami melon seedlings may grow rather densely during the growing process, we need to plan the planting density well when planting. According to relevant melon growers, under normal circumstances about 600 Hami melon plants can be planted per mu. This density is actually quite dense, and it is very suitable for land that is not particularly fertile. That is to say, the average distance between plants and rows is about 1 m. This can increase the fruit-setting rate of Hami melons and at the same time raise the sugar content of Hami melons.

4. Scientific Fertilization

There is a slight difference between fertilizing Hami melons and fertilizing watermelons and muskmelons: after the base fertilizer, Hami melons only need one additional topdressing. In fact, this also means that the base fertilizer must be sufficient to sustain them until the fruit-setting stage. On average, 100 jin of nitrogen fertilizer, 100 jin of phosphate fertilizer, and 100 jin of potassium fertilizer are needed per mu. At the same time, 200 jin of farmyard manure can be applied as base fertilizer, but all of it needs to be applied deeply so that the plants can absorb the nutrients and the fruit-setting rate can be increased. After the Hami melons set fruit, we need to spray melon fertilizer to promote the swelling of the Hami melons and make them grow faster and fuller.

5. Vine Training and Pinching

When Hami melons are growing and the seedlings are young, to prevent the seedlings from growing excessively without flowering or bearing fruit, we remove the tips of the Hami melons when the seedlings reach 50 cm, letting them grow side branches again. After the Hami melons set fruit, we need to tidy the melon seedlings in the field. Sometimes the Hami melons set fruit rather densely, so we should remove the smaller melons, and then remove some of the flowers and leaves and branches near the Hami melons. All of this helps promote flowering and preserve fruit, increasing Hami melon yields.
