I. Seed selection: Choose fully mature seeds from superior varieties, as this ensures a high germination rate. That is, at the time of walnut harvest, those whose husks (green skin) have split open and fallen off on their own, or those whose husks have not split open and fallen off about half a month past the maturity period.
II. Seed treatment: In early March, subject the seeds intended for propagation to sand storage treatment. The method is as follows: choose a wind-sheltered, sun-facing spot, use clean sand or local sandy loam soil, and you may build brick walls on both sides at the base of the front windows of a house. Soak the seeds in cold water for 1-2 days until they have absorbed enough water, then spread a layer of sandy soil at the bottom, place a layer of seeds on top; then spread another layer of sandy soil, place another layer of seeds... about 4-5 layers of seeds, cover the top with a layer of sandy loam soil, then sprinkle water, cover the top with a straw curtain or corn stalks, and sprinkle water once every two days to maintain the moisture content of the sand-stored seeds, for about one month. In early April, when the seeds sprout tender buds, prepare the land and sow. Sowing method: for ease of management, prepare the nursery land in beds. Length 6 m, width 4 m, plant spacing 12-15 cm, row spacing 30-40 cm. Place the sprouted seeds with the seed suture line perpendicular to the ground, at a depth of 10-12 cm, with a soil covering thickness of 6-8 cm. After covering with soil, there is no need to tread it down; after the seeds for the entire bed have been sown, water thoroughly. Using this propagation method, the walnut seedlings produced emerge completely and are robust.
