What are the common pests and diseases in cherry cultivation? How to prevent and control them?

Many pests and diseases of cherry are the same as those of other stone fruit trees, and their control can be used as a reference. The main diseases harming cherry are shot hole disease, crown and root rot, and gummosis. Crown and root rot mostly occurs on trees at the first fruiting stage, causing decay of the crown and root. Control methods: mainly avoid long-term mounding of soil around the crown and root zone, and control underground pests that gnaw and wound the bark. At the same time, inspect frequently; when diseased trees are found, scrape and treat promptly, and after scraping disinfect with Bordeaux mixture or lime sulfur mixture. For severe crown and root rot, spring bridge grafting can also be used to restore above-ground growth. The main insect pests harming cherry include red-necked longhorn beetle, golden-lined jewel beetle, small clearwing moth, globular scale insect and yellow-tipped tussock moth (Phalera flavescens caterpillars), etc. The small clearwing moth has 1 generation per year, and its larvae damage the bark cortex of large branches. Control measures mainly include spraying during the peak emergence period of adults, whitewashing the branches and trunk to prevent egg laying, and timely chemical control or digging out when frass from larvae is found in the field.
