In blueberry fertilization, applying a complete fertilizer is far more effective than applying a single-nutrient fertilizer. Applying a complete fertilizer can increase yield by 40% compared with applying a single-nutrient fertilizer. On rabbiteye blueberries, applying only nitrogen fertilizer for 6 years reduced yield by 40%. On the dark brown forest soil of the Changbai Mountain area in China, applying NP and NPK fertilizers increased yield and 100-fruit weight, while applying only nitrogen fertilizer reduced yield and 100-fruit weight. Therefore, blueberry fertilization should be based mainly on complete fertilizers.
Blueberries readily absorb ammonium N, whereas nitrate N is not only difficult for them to absorb but also has adverse effects on blueberry growth. The most recommended ammonium N fertilizer for blueberries is (NH4)2SO4. Applying (NH4)2SO4 to the soil not only supplies ammonium N to blueberries but also helps lower soil pH, making it especially suitable for mineral soils and calcareous soils with higher pH.
