The fruit-setting rate of winter jujube can be improved through the following methods:
I. Summer pruning. For winter jujube trees that have entered the fruiting stage, to achieve normal fruit setting, in addition to proper winter pruning, summer pruning must also be done well. Summer pruning begins at sprouting, and all secondary shoots that do not need to be cultivated should be removed. Around May 20, pinch the tips of the retained branches, and continue pinching until mid-July. For especially vigorous trees, during the fruit-setting period, the bearing shoots should be shortened to promote fruit setting.
II. Use a winter jujube fruit-setting agent to regulate tree nutrition in advance and promote fruit setting. The winter jujube fruit-setting agent is a product in the Zaofengling series. It contains multiple ingredients and is specially designed to solve the difficulty of fruit setting in winter jujube. Its main function is to regulate the nutrient distribution ratio between vegetative growth and flowering and fruit setting. Its biggest feature is changing the application from flowering stage to pre-flowering stage. The usage is carried out in two steps: in late May, when 1-2 flowers are occasionally seen on the winter jujube tree, begin application. First dissolve each bag of the agent in a small amount of water, then dilute with 70 kg of water and spray the whole tree. For especially vigorous trees that have difficulty setting fruit year after year, the amount of water should be reduced to 50 kg. In late June, when the jujube fruits grow to the size of mung beans, increase the dilution water for the fruit-setting agent to 140 kg and spray once more.
III. Girdling and control of the healing period of the girdle wound. At the initial flowering stage, perform girdling on time. The width of the girdle wound should be about 0.8 cm, and the healing period of the girdle wound should be controlled at about 35 days. After girdling, when signs of early healing of the girdle wound appear, a second girdling or ring cutting should be carried out. To prevent tree decline or death, when girdling, auxiliary nurturing branches should be retained or girdling should be done on the scaffold branches of the canopy (do not girdle weak branches). Girdling can also be alternated on several main fruiting branches.
IV. Use Zaofengling No. 2 to prevent young fruit drop and promote expansion. The method is to use Zaofengling No. 2 one week before the girdle wound heals, and use it once more after one week.
V. Increase the large-fruit rate of winter jujube and prevent late-stage fruit cracking. Use Zaofengling No. 2 to further promote jujube fruit expansion, starting around late August, using it 2 times consecutively with an interval of one week. In mid-September, spray once with an anti-cracking and anti-rot agent.
