When planting chestnut trees, the following points should be noted:
1. Young tree management ① After planting, chestnut seedlings should be watered promptly, and thereafter watered regularly according to soil moisture conditions. ② Weeds grow quickly; to reduce competition with the trees for water and nutrients, weeds within the tree basin should be removed promptly. ③ Cover the ground beneath the trees with harvested straw or green grass. ④ Spray the trees about every 15 days with a mixture of 0.3% urea and monopotassium phosphate to increase tree nutrition. ⑤ Leguminous short-stem crops such as beans and peanuts are suitable; planting tall-stem crops such as sorghum and corn is strictly prohibited.
2. Grafted tree management ① For suckers that regrow on the trees in June, they should be removed promptly from young trees; for large trees that have been top-grafted and variety-changed, when removing suckers, do not remove them all: for parallel branches or branches with a wide angle, the suckers should be heavily short-pruned leaving 2-3 leaves, to increase leaf area and prevent sunscald. ② In early to mid-June, promptly secure the new shoots so they are not broken by wind; when tying supports, they must be tied firmly, and at the same time continue pinching the growing tips of new shoots that have reached 20 cm, to promote branching.
3. Dense planting orchard management ① Watering and fertilizing: where watering conditions allow, water twice, namely the pre-flowering watering and the post-flowering watering, and apply fertilizer to the soil together with watering. For foliar feeding, mainly use urea or monopotassium phosphate at a concentration of 0.3%. ② Summer pruning: for upright branches with a small angle, spread them open to increase light in the inner canopy. Heavily short-prune male flower branches, leaving 2-3 leaves after pruning, to prevent sunscald. Thin out all weak, slender branches in the inner canopy.
4. Pest and disease control: monitor pests and diseases at all times. On grafted chestnut trees, the buds are easily damaged by some leaf-eating pests such as scarab beetles, and as the trees grow, red spider mites and aphids will also damage the leaves at any time, so control should be carried out promptly. Biological agents or bionic agents should be chosen as pesticides.
