Summer is a vigorous period for chestnut flowering, fruiting and shoot growth, and it is also the first peak period of root growth for chestnut trees. Nutrient consumption within the tree is high, and it is especially sensitive to boron fertilizer. Nutrient deficiency will affect the normal growth of chestnut trees, leading to an increase in the number of empty burs in that year's chestnut crop, low yield and poor quality. In summer, chestnut trees are mainly fertilized by two methods, soil application and foliar application, to supplement the tree's nutrient needs.
1. Soil fertilization method. For chestnut orchards with thin, poor soil and a severe lack of fertilizer, the soil fertilization method gives better results. The method is: dig a circular ring trench within the drip line of the chestnut tree canopy, with a trench width of 25 cm and a trench depth of 20 cm, and apply per tree 1 kg of superphosphate, 300 g of urea, and 250-500 g of borax. When applying, the urea and borax should first be dissolved in water and then applied in the trench; splash water while fertilizing, and use a hoe to mix the fertilizer evenly with the soil so that the fertilizer solution penetrates to the roots as quickly as possible and is absorbed and used by the root system. After fertilizing, backfill the trench with soil promptly to prevent nutrient volatilization. If an appropriate amount of farmyard manure is also applied during fertilization to enrich the soil, the effect is very good for getting more chestnuts and reducing the empty bur rate the following year.
2. Foliar fertilization method. The foliar fertilization method is suitable for chestnut trees on all kinds of soil in summer. The method is: mix 0.3%-0.4% urea solution, 0.3%-0.5% monopotassium phosphate solution, and 0.3%-0.4% borax solution evenly, spray once every 10 days, and 2 consecutive sprays are sufficient.
