Where is Zhuguan Hami Melon suitable to grow, and how to cultivate it well? Please provide introduction and guidance.
Zhuguan Hami Melon is a Hami melon variety from Northwest China introduced to the southeastern region of China. Because it cannot adapt to the climate conditions of small temperature differences, high humidity, and insufficient sunlight, it often shows poor disease resistance, low sugar content, and is prone to cracking on the melon surface, which affects the melon's marketability. The new Hami melon variety Zhuguan has characteristics such as good flesh color, stable netting, and good quality. It is not only suitable for open-field cultivation in Northwest China, but can also be cultivated under protected conditions in the southeastern region.
Zhuguan is a large-fruited netted Hami melon variety. It can be cultivated in early spring greenhouses or in open fields under gauze net sheds in southern winters. The plants grow vigorously and have strong resistance to gummy stem blight. The melon is elongated oval, with a single melon weight of over 2 kg, a melon shape index of about 1.7, grayish-white skin covered with regular netting, relatively dense netting, good commercial appearance, no stem detachment, and no fruit cracking. The flesh is deep orange-yellow to light red, the seed cavity is small, the flesh thickness is about 4.2 cm, the soluble solids content in the center is 15%-16%, the texture is relatively crisp, and it has a rich fragrance. Under suitable temperatures, the whole growth period is about 105 days, and about 42 days from female flower opening to melon maturity.
For greenhouse cultivation, hanging vine vertical planting should be adopted, with about 1300 plants per mu, single-vine pruning, leaving 1 melon per plant, and artificial supplementary pollination. When planting, apply 200 kg of quicklime per mu to adjust soil pH, and at the same time increase the amount of farmyard manure applied to ensure melon quality. Temperature changes may cause fluctuations in maturity, so it is recommended to mark the plants during planting and taste before harvesting to determine the best picking time. Zhuguan has strong storage and transport tolerance, and the melon can be stored for a long time without the flesh becoming soft.
