How much fertilizer does a banana plant need? A detailed guide to fertilizing knowledge

The amount of fertilizer applied to bananas is closely related to soil fertility, climate characteristics, fertilizer properties, fertilizing methods, variety, growth stage, and planting density. Fertile soil and less fertilizer can also produce a good harvest. For example, in some mountain banana orchards on Hainan Island, even without fertilizing, a single plant can yield 30 kg. With high rainfall, tall stems, high-yielding varieties, and high planting density, the amount of fertilizer applied should be greater. Foliar topdressing saves more fertilizer, and hole application and drenching save more fertilizer than broadcasting. Fertigation, which is popular abroad, is a relatively fertilizer-saving application method.

Perhaps because of the fertilizing methods and the relatively high rainfall, the amount of fertilizer applied to bananas in China is generally much higher than abroad. The annual application rate per hectare in high-yielding banana orchards is: nitrogen fertilizer 900-1200 kg, phosphate fertilizer 270-360 kg, potassium fertilizer 1200-1500 kg, with a ratio of about 1:0.3:1.5. On acidic dry land and mountainous land, 2000 kg of slaked lime can be applied per hectare each year. In inland sloping-land banana orchards, 100-150 kg of magnesium fertilizer can be applied per hectare each year.
