When planting bananas, the following points need attention:
1. Why choose a banana plantation site facing south with its back to the north, or facing east with its back to the west: As everyone knows, bananas are a tropical fruit, fond of heat and sunlight, afraid of cold and intolerant of drought.
Therefore, when choosing a banana plantation site, meet its requirements as much as possible. A flatland banana plantation should have a mountain or woodland on its north side. A hillside banana plantation should face south with its back to the north, because this acts as a barrier, blocking cold winds in winter and greatly reducing cold damage to the bananas. At the same time, the south slope receives sunlight all year round, while the north slope receives less sunlight than the south slope in winter and spring. Choosing a site facing east with its back to the west can avoid intense afternoon sunlight in summer and autumn (that is, the heat from the slanting western sun), which raises soil temperature, causes large amounts of soil moisture to evaporate, and makes bananas prone to drought damage to their roots.
2. Mountain banana plantations should preferably be chosen on slopes below 30 degrees: Generally, mountain plantations are mostly established on slopes below 30 degrees. First, it makes planting and management convenient; second, it helps with soil and water conservation in the orchard. When bananas are cultivated on hillsides, it is also suitable to choose small slopes for planting, but this does not mean that slopes greater than 30 degrees cannot be planted. If the soil and water source conditions are very good, narrow terraces or fish-scale pits can also be used for planting, but banana management work will be inconvenient.
3. Can tissue-cultured plantlets of Fenjiao banana be planted in continuous blocks: The biggest problem in Fenjiao cultivation is infection with banana yellow dragon disease (banana bunchy top disease). There is still no new disease-resistant Fenjiao variety. If planted in continuous blocks, the disease spreads more easily, so controlling it is relatively difficult. Disease-free tissue-cultured Fenjiao plantlets can reduce the incidence rate, but tissue-cultured plantlets are not equivalent to having disease resistance; they simply have fewer chances of carrying disease than sucker seedlings, so the incidence rate is naturally somewhat lower than that of sucker seedlings. However, if continuous-block planting is carried out, both sucker seedlings and tissue-cultured plantlets are equally susceptible to the disease.
4. Regarding the basic condition requirements for cultivating Fenjiao on hillsides: Whether Fenjiao can be cultivated on hillsides depends mainly on whether the mountain conditions are suitable for normal growth and fruiting requirements of Fenjiao. Specifically: whether the local soil is loose, deep red loam that is neither sandy nor heavy clay; whether there are nearby mountain ponds or reservoir water sources for irrigating the banana plantation, and the soil should not be too acidic (because when the pH value is less than 5, yellow dragon disease is more likely to occur).
If the above conditions are met, further choose a south slope, southeast slope, or east slope, with a slope of less than 30 degrees, and plant in a lower slope or at the foot of the mountain with lush vegetation, relatively fertile and moist conditions, because upper slopes mostly have thin soil layers, poor and barren soil, drought, difficult irrigation, and strong winds, and are not very suitable for planting Fenjiao.
