Pruning red-fleshed dragon fruit is meant to achieve a balance between the main stems and the side stems, so that the dragon fruit has reasonable light exposure within a reasonable space. The pruning operations mainly consist of pinching off the growing tips and thinning out excessively dense new shoots in unreasonable positions. By pinching off the growing tips at the top, the growth of the main stems is suppressed; by thinning out shoots, the main and secondary stems are prevented from becoming indistinct, which would affect flower bud differentiation. The primary main stem is pinched off when it grows to the horizontal plane of the trellis. The branches that grow out, under the condition that excess buds are thinned out, are pinched off when they reach 60-80 cm, which can bring the plant into the fruiting stage as quickly as possible, with the main stems clearly defined and the side stems bearing flowers and fruit as appropriate. Because dragon fruit flowers open at night and wither in the morning, with the whole flowering process finishing in about 12 hours, the fruit-setting rate from self-pollination alone is limited. To achieve high yields, pollination must be done manually. (1) Artificial pollination: from after 8 o'clock in the evening to before 8 o'clock in the morning, artificial supplementary pollination can be used; (2) Bee pollination: especially for bases growing dragon fruit on a large scale, using Chinese honey bees (Apis cerana) for pollination is the most perfect choice, as it is fast, saves labor, and gives good results.
