Strengthening summer management of young peach trees can accelerate the development of a good tree shape, increase nutrient accumulation, promote flower bud differentiation, and achieve the goal of early high-quality and high-yield production in the peach orchard.
1. Summer care: mainly through technical measures such as removing sprouts, pinching, twisting shoots, cutting shoots, bending branches, and thinning, timely regulate peach tree growth, make full use of multiple shoots, reduce ineffective growth, improve light conditions, prevent internal canopy shading, ease tree vigor, increase nutrient accumulation, and promote flower bud formation.
1. Twisting shoots. The time for twisting shoots is when new shoots grow to about 30 cm and have not yet become woody. The main targets for twisting shoots are new shoots growing from the upper part of the main branch extension shoot and beside wounds from pruning large branches, as well as vigorous shoots such as water sprouts on the back. The twisting position is preferably 15 cm along the middle of the new shoot.
2. Pinching. For overly vigorous water sprouts, pinch when the new shoots are 20-30 cm long, then twist the secondary shoots that emerge.
3. Cutting shoots, generally done twice, once from late June to early July, and once from late August to early September (earlier if growth stops early). For vigorously growing shoots that are densely distributed on the outer and inner parts of the canopy, cut them back leaving 3-4 buds at the base.
4. Bending branches. Carry out from May to July. For vigorous shoots used as secondary main branches and large branch groups, bend them to about 80 degrees. Note that they should not be bent too flat, as this affects branch growth.
2. Fertilizer and water management
Young peach trees should follow the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently, fertilizing 1-2 times per month depending on tree vigor, preferably by applying water-soluble fertilizer in ring-shaped trenches, and combined with pest and disease control for foliar topdressing. You can use 0.3% urea plus 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 10000-fold Pen Shi Bao solution. Peach orchards should also pay attention to drainage during rainy seasons, with deep furrows and high beds, to avoid waterlogging in the orchard.
3. Pest and disease control
The main summer diseases of young peach trees include peach bacterial shot hole disease, peach anthracnose, etc. You can use 72% agricultural streptomycin 2000-fold plus 50% carbendazim powder 1000-fold solution for control. The main pests include peach fruit borer, peach leafhopper, stink bugs, scarab beetles, etc. You can use 5% fipronil emulsifiable concentrate 2000-fold or 40% dusiben emulsifiable concentrate 1000-fold, or 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate 2000-fold solution for control.
