How do you propagate grapevines by cuttings in summer? An introduction
In summer, use non-lignified or semi-lignified new grapevine shoots for green cuttings; the cuttings can leave the nursery after leaf fall in autumn of the same year, greatly shortening the propagation cycle. Green cuttings produce seedlings with a high survival rate and good quality, and are relatively widely used in grapevine nursery production.
Cuttings can be taken from June to August. When the new shoots have 5-10 nodes, are semi-lignified, and have a certain firmness and maturity, cut and insert them immediately.
Etiolation treatment: 21 days before cutting, wrap the new shoots planned for cutting on the grapevine branches with black cloth strips, thick paper, etc. to carry out etiolation treatment. This can effectively prevent direct sunlight from reaching the green shoots, helping the root primordia to differentiate and take root.
Seedbed preparation: Choose loose, fertile sandy loam or lightly clayey loam and build it into a seedbed 1-1.2 m wide. The seedbed requires good light conditions and convenient drainage and irrigation.
Leafy cuttings: Cut the cuttings into small sections 15-20 cm long. Make the lower cut slightly slanted, and make the upper cut 1 cm above the upper bud. Remove the lower leaves so the cuttings contact the soil well, and keep 1-2 upper leaves. To reduce transpiration, if the leaves are large, one leaf can be cut off. Insert the cuttings into the prepared seedbed at a plant-row spacing of 10 cm x 15 cm.
Management after cutting: After cutting, water thoroughly so the cuttings and soil are fully in contact. Also build a shade shed 0.8-1 m high and the same width as the bed, and remove it after the cuttings have established.
