July is the period of rapid fruit enlargement for late-maturing pears. This topdressing helps the fruit enlarge, raises the proportion of first- and second-grade fruit, and can also regulate the competition for nutrients between fruit enlargement and flower bud differentiation, reducing the alternate bearing phenomenon. A nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer is preferable. The topdressing amount should vary with the tree; when topdressing nitrogen fertilizer, the trench should be shallow, about 15-20 cm, and when topdressing phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, the trench should be appropriately deepened. When topdressing chemical fertilizer, it should be broadcast, so as to avoid fertilizer being too concentrated and causing fertilizer burn to the roots. This topdressing is especially important for pear trees with a large fruit load; vigorous trees with a small yield may be given no topdressing or a reduced one.
For foliar topdressing at this stage, a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer is still preferable. In practice, a 0.5% urea solution and a 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution are generally sprayed. For the early-maturing Suli pear, which is about to ripen and be harvested, a foliar topdressing should also be applied promptly to speed up fruit enlargement and increase the tree's nutrient accumulation. When applying foliar topdressing, spray mainly on the underside of the leaves, but both sides must be covered, so as to facilitate fertilizer absorption and improve fertilizer efficiency.
For young trees 1-2 years after planting, timely irrigation is needed during summer drought to ensure water supply and promote young tree growth. The number and timing of irrigations should be determined by the soil management method, rainfall and soil moisture conditions. For young trees over 3 years old and trees that have just begun bearing fruit, the number of summer irrigations is generally one, and for trees in full bearing age the number of irrigations must not be less than 2.
