Pineapple black heart disease is one of the main pineapple diseases, mainly damaging the fruit; in mild cases it affects fruit quality, and in severe cases it makes the fruit lose its commercial value.
Pineapple wilt disease pictures
Pineapple wilt disease is called red leaf disease, root rot, and pineapple plague by growers. The disease is a devastating disease caused by mealybug damage, and it can occur from the seedling stage to the fruiting stage. In diseased plants, the small roots first die and rot, then most of the root system rots. The leaf tips of the diseased plants turn yellow and dry up, shrink, and lose their luster; the leaf margins curl inward. As the disease worsens, the yellow parts gradually darken and become red-brown streaks, and the red parts extend toward the middle of the leaves. The plants stop growing, the flower stalks shrink, and the fruit becomes smaller. In severe cases, the plants die.
Pineapple plague disease pictures
In the aboveground parts of pineapple plague disease, the base leaves turn yellow and red at the early stage of the disease, shrink, and lose their luster; the leaf margins curl inward, and later the leaf tips dry up, the leaves wilt, and the plants stop growing. As the disease develops, rotting spreads from the root tips to part or all of the root system, and the plants die. Most people believe the disease is caused by infection with a virus transmitted by pineapple mealybugs.
Pineapple root-knot nematode disease pictures
Because root-knot nematodes parasitize the roots and cause the root tissue to overgrow, tumors of varying sizes form.

It mainly damages seedlings, but can also damage mature plants. In the early stage of affected plants, the leaves are still green, only slightly darker and lusterless; the heart leaves are yellow-white and easy to pull up, and it is generally not easy to notice. Then the leaf color of the diseased plants gradually fades to yellow or red-yellow, the leaf tips turn brown and dry up, and a light brown water-soaked rotting surface appears at the leaf base. The rotting tissue softens into a cheese-like state, and the boundary between diseased and healthy parts is dark brown. Due to the invasion of secondary bacteria, the rotting surface gives off a foul odor, and eventually the whole plant dies.

This disease mostly occurs on ripe fruit during storage and is a common disease in pineapple storage. Infection first appears at the cut end of the fruit stalk. In the early stage of the disease, dark brown water-soaked soft spots appear on the fruit surface, and the water-soaked part of the spots has a clear boundary with the healthy tissue. The affected tissue gradually breaks down, turns black, and gives off a distinctive aroma. In the later stage, the diseased fruit exudes a large amount of liquid.
