Autumn Jujube Tree Planting Methods and Key Technical Points
How to plant jujube trees in autumn? Here are the key points for your reference: 1. Planting time: The earlier jujube trees are planted in autumn, the higher the survival rate. Generally, planting from mid-September to early December is suitable. 2. Digging the hole: Dig a planting hole 60 cm long and 60 cm wide, apply sufficient base fertilizer, backfill soil, water, and wait to plant.
How to plant jujube trees in autumn? Here are the key points for your referenceWhen planting jujube trees in autumn, pay attention to the following key points for reference:
1. Planting time
The earlier jujube trees are planted in autumn, the higher the survival rate. Generally, planting from mid-September to early December is suitable.
2. Digging the hole
Dig a planting hole 60 cm long and 60 cm wide, apply sufficient base fertilizer, backfill soil, water, and wait to plant.
3. Lifting the seedlings
For autumn planting, jujube trees with a high degree of lignification and high-quality seedlings are best. Before lifting the seedlings, water the nursery once. When lifting seedlings, the root system must be complete, with the main root more than 30 cm long, minimizing damage to lateral roots and fibrous roots. Seedlings should be planted immediately after being lifted.
4. Planting
Dig the tree hole at the planting point, backfill part of the mature soil, then place the seedling into the hole and hold it upright, fill with fine moist soil, and lift the seedling slightly upward to spread out the root system, then fill with soil and press firmly. The planting depth should be such that the root crown is level with the ground or slightly deeper, not more than 5 cm below the root crown at most. After planting, mound up a small pile of soil.
5. Pruning the trunk
For jujube seedlings of good quality, cut off 20 cm; for those of poor quality, cut off 1/3 of the seedling height, and also cut off one secondary branch to encourage new branch growth.
6. Watering before freezing
Water once before winter arrives to protect against freezing, around mid to late November.
7. Mounding soil for cold protection
From the end of November to early December, seedlings should be bent toward the south to prevent sunscald above the root crown caused by large fluctuations in soil temperature. When bending, do not bend sharply, as the seedlings are brittle and hard and easily cracked or broken. When bending, first build a slanted soil platform 20 cm high on the south side of the seedling, gently press the seedling onto the slanted platform, then cover with 20 cm of moist fine soil.
8. Removing the cold-protection soil
Because jujube trees sprout late, the time for removing soil is slightly later than for apples and pears, generally around mid-April. If there is a late spring cold snap, the soil removal time can be postponed. Remove the soil in two stages: first remove a thin layer of soil, then gradually remove all the soil, and straighten the seedlings.
9. Covering with plastic film
Before spring germination, water once to promote sprouting, then cover with plastic film to preserve moisture, so as to improve the survival rate of the seedlings.
