How do you prune a waxberry tree during its dormant season? When is the dormant season for a waxberry tree? What pruning methods are there for waxberry? Please give an introduction. The dormant season of a waxberry tree generally runs from late October to mid-November to mid-February to late March. Dormant season pruning methods for waxberry include: removing sprouts, pinching, bending and propping branches, girdling, ring barking, inverted bark grafting, and root cutting; for detailed operation methods, refer to the following list:
Removing sprouts from a waxberry tree:After budding in spring and before growth stops in autumn, promptly remove useless sprouts from the tree, including vigorous water sprouts growing from the base of the trunk and overly strong branches growing on the underside of main branches, secondary main branches and large auxiliary branches.
Pinching a waxberry tree:This is done after the spring shoots begin to grow and while the tissue has not yet lignified. On one hand, it helps increase the fruit set rate and reduce fruit drop; on the other hand, it promotes water sprouts in bare parts of the canopy to send out secondary shoots, which then develop into bearing mother branches.
Bending and propping branches of a waxberry tree:For bending branches, a rope or galvanized wire is generally tied to the middle of a scaffold branch, and the branch is pulled outward to a horizontal direction at the required angle. The part tied to the branch must be padded with rubber or other soft, pliable material to prevent bark abrasion and infection with cancer-like disease. For propping branches, sturdy short wooden sticks are used to widen the angle formed by the main branches and the trunk. The purpose of both is to encourage the waxberry canopy to open up, improve light penetration, produce uniform fruit, and avoid flat, one-sided fruiting.
Girdling, ring barking, inverted bark grafting and root cutting of a waxberry tree:For girdling, use a spiral cut deep into the xylem. For ring barking, control the width to about 1/8 of the trunk diameter. For inverted bark grafting, control the width to about 1/4 of the trunk diameter. For vigorously growing trees with strong vigor, low fruit set rate and low yield, girdling, ring barking, inverted bark grafting and root cutting can be used.
