The banana tree is a fruit tree that bears fruit only once. Under conditions of sufficient fertilizer and water, the underground corm has the characteristic of successively sending up suckers. Therefore, when cultivating banana trees, you must select and keep the most suitable sucker on the corm of the fruiting mother plant as the next generation mother plant; this is called keeping suckers, and digging out the excess suckers is called removing suckers.

Introduction to the types of banana suckers:

1. The first-row sucker, also called the meridian sucker or upright sucker, is the sucker first sent out by the growing mother plant. It mostly emerges in spring at the end of the mother plant opposite the remnant stem that has already borne fruit. Its position is deeper, its relationship with the mother plant is close, and its effect on the mother plant is great, so it is not kept as a replacement mother plant.

2. The second-row sucker, also called the side sucker, angle sucker, or splayed sucker, is the sucker sent out by the mother plant on both sides for the second time. Its position is shallower, its effect on the mother plant is relatively small, and it grows faster than the first-row sucker, so it is used to replace the mother plant.

3. The third-row sucker and fourth-row sucker are respectively the third and fourth suckers successively sent out after the second-row sucker grows. These suckers have shallow roots and grow slowly and weakly, so they are not kept for use but serve as propagation material.

4. Geshanfei, also called the "mother-behind sucker," is a sucker sprouting from an old remnant stump. It grows relatively slowly and is used as planting stock for autumn planting.
