How to prune a jujube tree? Are there pictures to illustrate? Experienced gardeners are also asked to help guideDuring the growth of the jujube tree there are four types of buds: main buds, secondary buds, latent buds, and adventitious buds; the branches include the jujube head (vegetative shoot), secondary branches (fruit-bearing base branches), jujube spurs (fruit-bearing mother branches), and jujube pendants (fruiting branches). During the growth process the jujube tree needs a certain amount of pruning. Zhongdi Network has compiled the pruning methods for jujube trees, listed below for gardeners' reference.
Method one,In the first year after planting, the jujube tree grows and develops very slowly, and some farmers even call it a false death; after 2-3 years the jujube head extends along a single axis, and the branches grow a large amount but with few branches; in 2-4 years it can bloom but bears very little fruit. Therefore, pruning should focus on expanding the canopy and cultivating the scaffold branches.
Method two,Because the branches of the jujube tree respond slowly to pruning, many old fruit-growing areas have a saying: "two cuts to make branches grow, one cut to bear fruit." To increase the number of branches, only by heading back the jujube head and thinning out the secondary branches can the main buds in the leaf axils of the jujube head be stimulated to sprout. After the canopy is basically formed, apart from some main branch extension heads, breaking the fixed buds on the excess jujube heads can promote fruit set.
Method three,When pruning a jujube tree there is no need to deliberately cultivate fruiting branch groups; the fruiting branch groups of the jujube tree are the secondary branches of the jujube head and the jujube spurs borne on them. The fruiting branch groups are naturally produced as the jujube head extends, and the fruiting position is relatively stable.
Method four,Because the jujube tree has fewer branches, winter pruning only involves cultivating the scaffold branches, adjusting the subordinate relationships of the branches, and renewing aging branches. In some orchards in our city where jujube is intercropped with grain, in winter only a small amount of branch thinning and heading back is done. Summer pruning mainly revolves around protecting flowers, protecting fruit, and improving the fruit-setting rate.
