How to prune jujube trees in spring? Please introduce the detailed methods and their effectsSpring pruning of jujube trees is generally done from bud break to before flowering (late April to mid-May). Common pruning methods include opening the angle, scoring, bud removal, and pinching. For detailed operations, refer to the following:
Opening the angle of jujube trees uses measures such as propping and pulling:Open the branches to the required angle and appropriate position. The main targets for opening the angle are upright branches, parallel branches, crossing branches, and overlapping branches. According to surveys, an upright branch with a diameter of 3-4 cm and a length of more than 2 m can produce only 1.5 kg of jujubes, while after opening the angle to 60-70, the yield can increase to about 5 kg. When opening the angle, prevent the branches from splitting, and the branches must not be pulled into a bow shape.
Scoring jujube trees:Score a crescent shape above the bud or at the lower part of the branch (the widest part of the two cuts must not exceed 0.3 cm) and apply No. 2 Flower Promoter. This promotes the fruit tree's nutrient regulation, more flowering, more fruit set, and thoroughly balances alternate bearing. It promotes the sprouting of main buds; balances tree vigor and controls the growth of strong branches.
Bud removal on jujube trees: After jujube trees sprout, when the young buds grow to 5-10 cm, promptly remove the unnecessary sprouts on the scaffold branches. This can save nutrients and increase the fruit-setting rate.
Pinching jujube trees:Mainly used for young shoots sprouting from the jujube spurs on secondary branches. If these young shoots are cut off together with the secondary branch, the fruiting area is reduced. If they are cut off from the jujube spur, the jujube spurs will no longer sprout jujube-bearing shoots the next year, and it is also easy to stimulate other jujube spurs on that secondary branch to send out new shoots again. After pinching, promptly apply a callus antiseptic film to the pruning cut to protect the growth of wound-healing tissue and prevent infection by rot-causing pathogens.
The correct treatment should be below the permanent secondary branch of the young shoot, leaving two nodes of deciduous secondary branches for pinching. Compared with no pinching in the same year, it has a significant yield-increasing effect, while retaining two nodes of shriveled buds, which can still sprout jujube-bearing shoots the next year and form jujube spurs.
