In 2012, the national level of mechanized rapeseed planting and mechanized harvesting stood at 12.3% and 13.3% respectively, far lower than other crops.

To keep the “oil bottle” stable, in April last year, the Ministry of Agriculture launched the Yangtze River middle and lower reaches rapeseed yield increase model research project, led by the Hubei Provincial Department of Agriculture, with the participation of the departments of agriculture of the four provinces of Hunan, Sichuan, Jiangxi and Jiangsu, to overcome the bottlenecks of early-maturing, high-yield, high-oil, high-resistance varieties and mechanization technology in rapeseed production.

Over more than a year, new breakthroughs have been made in research on early-maturing varieties. Hubei has bred several promising early-maturing varieties and combinations such as “Shengguang 127” and “Huazao 291”, which can be harvested from late April to early May in the southeast and central regions. They are suitable varieties for the “rapeseed-rice-rice” combination, can ease the tight conflict in crop rotation, and can expand the rapeseed planting area in triple-cropping regions; in Hunan, a batch of early-maturing varieties (combinations) maturing around April 25 have been bred, and a batch of extremely early-maturing rapeseed lines sown in the Changsha area at the end of October and maturing around April 20. At the same time, the project areas have balanced grain and oil and pursued coordinated development, exploring triple-cropping planting models for grain and oil such as “rapeseed-rice-rice” and “rapeseed-rice-ratoon rice”.

The meeting revealed that through large-scale promotion of mature technical models, by 2020, the rapeseed area in the Yangtze River middle and lower reaches project areas will achieve stable development, reaching more than 73 million mu, an increase of about 7 million mu; total output will approach 10 million tons, an increase of 1.3 million tons; the full-process mechanization rate of rapeseed will increase by 15 percentage points; and grain yield per unit area will increase by an average of 1.5 percentage points per year.

  • Ministry of Agriculture Issues 2014/2015 Technical Guidance on Winter Rapeseed Production

Oil Crops Expert Steering Group of the Ministry of Agriculture, National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center. This year's summer-harvested rapeseed continued to increase and once again hit a record high. The meteorological department predicts that, affected by an El Nino event, low temperatures and continuous rain may occur in the Yangtze River Basin in autumn, while the harvest period of the preceding rice crop will be delayed, which will adversely affect timely sowing and transplanting of rapeseed.

  • Pre-winter management of wheat and rapeseed: Ministry of Agriculture sends supervision teams to major production areas for guidance

At present, autumn and winter planting is nearing its end, and this is the critical period for strengthening pre-winter management and cultivating strong seedlings. On November 17, the Ministry of Agriculture dispatched 5 supervision teams composed of departmental officials and experts to 10 major production provinces including Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui to carry out autumn

  • Three achievements in rapeseed direct seeders and windrowers pass appraisal

Recently, 3 achievements in rapeseed direct seeders and windrowers led by the research team of the College of Engineering at Huazhong Agricultural University passed appraisal by the Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology. Luo Xiwen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at South China Agricultural University, and Chen Xuegeng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and researcher at the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Reclamation Sciences, served as chairman and vice-chairman of the appraisal committee respectively. Zhu Ming, president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Engineering Research and Design, and Wang Hanzhong, director of the Oil Crops Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, attended the appraisal meeting. After appraisal, the expert panel concluded that all 3 technologies are at the international advanced level, with some at the international leading level. Experts said that China is a major rapeseed-growing country, yet the level of rapeseed mechanization remains low, and the mechanized sowing level of wheat in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is 37%, far below the national average of 87%. After the promotion and application of the 3 achievements, rapeseed (including wheat) planting will take a solid step forward on the road to full mechanization.

  • New-season rapeseed planting area shrinks, oilseed meal price trend hard to judge

A Where have the green and lush rapeseed fields gone? In the early winter season of past years, traveling across the land of Jingchu, green and lush rapeseed fields stretched as far as the eye could see, and the manually transplanted rapeseed stood as neatly as soldiers lined up in formation, a most pleasing sight. But now, even after driving over a thousand kilometers,

  • Increased rapeseed imports: uncertainty over rapeseed meal price rebound

Increased rapeseed imports put pressure on rapeseed meal. Statistics show that in October, China's rapeseed imports arriving at port totaled 187,000 tonnes, down 164% from 495,000 tonnes the previous month, but up 153.9% year on year from 737,000 tonnes in October last year. Current port inventory stands at 352,000 tonnes, up 40% month on month and up 89% year on year.

  • China's rapeseed imports enter a period of high rigid demand

The temporary inspection and quarantine measures implemented starting in 2009 meant that subsequent imported rapeseed could only enter a small number of China's coastal port areas, while its enormous advantages in price, cost, quality and supply in turn caused the imported rapeseed processing capacity in China's coastal areas to grow rapidly.

  • Rapeseed oil state reserve auction achieves 59.9% transaction rate

State reserve rapeseed oil auction transaction rate 59.9%. With approval from relevant state departments, the national temporary storage rapeseed oil competitive sales auction held on March 11 planned to sell 27,509 tons of 2010 rapeseed oil, with 16,477 tons actually sold, a transaction rate of 59.9%, at a price of 6,036 yuan/ton. Among them

  • A Hundred Million Mu of Rapeseed Flowers Bloom Across China: Where Does the Rapeseed Oil Go?

In early spring in March, the rapeseed flowers are blooming again, and the areas around cities and the ridges of the fields all turn golden yellow. Once the flowers finish blooming, freshly pressed rapeseed oil is about to hit the market. But this dark-colored oil, which carries the taste memories of the previous generation, is now nowhere to be found in today's shops and supermarkets.

  • Rapeseed planting area shrinks, output may fall by around 10%

Entering April, rapeseed is nearing the market across China. Because wheat prices were ideal in the summer and autumn of last year, planting returns were clearly higher than those for rapeseed, causing China's rapeseed sown area to shrink further. In addition, poor weather during the rapeseed growing period caused some areas to suffer
