Planting Methods and Key Technical Points for Mayodendron igneum

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views

Mayodendron igneum (scientific name: Mayodendron igneum (Kurz) Kurz) is a small tree of the genus Mayodendron in the family Bignoniaceae; the bark is smooth, and the young branches have oblong white lenticels. The leaflets are ovate to ovate-lanceolate, with a long acuminate apex and a broad cuneate base, glabrous on both surfaces. The inflorescence has 5-13 flowers, forming a short raceme, borne on old stems or lateral branches, with pedicels 5-10 mm long. The calyx is spathe-like, densely covered with minute pubescence on the outside. The corolla is orange-yellow to golden-yellow, tubular, slightly constricted at the base, with 5 semicircular, reflexed limb lobes. The filaments are covered with fine pubescence at the base, the anthers are versatile, and the anthers and stigma slightly protrude beyond the corolla tube. The stigma is 2-lobed. It often blooms on the trunk or old branches, like a blazing flame, hence the name Mayodendron igneum. The capsule is pendulous and corky. The seeds are ovate, with white transparent membranous wings. The flowering period is February to May, and the fruiting period is May to September.

Seed Propagation of Mayodendron igneum

Seed propagation is the main method of propagating Mayodendron igneum.

Mayodendron igneum can bloom in many seasons, so we can collect seeds in many seasons, and therefore we generally use seed propagation to propagate Mayodendron igneum. Our method of collecting Mayodendron igneum seeds is to pick the ripe Mayodendron igneum fruits, place them in a windless environment to dry, and after cracks appear from drying, gently knock the Mayodendron igneum seeds out, and in this way we have collected the Mayodendron igneum seeds. We can store the Mayodendron igneum seeds over winter and sow them when the suitable season arrives.

We generally sow the seeds in warm spring, because the seeds of Mayodendron igneum are very small, so we generally broadcast them directly on the soil, then cover them with a thin layer of soil, maintain a temperature of about 25°C, and at the same time keep the soil moist; they will germinate in about a week, and it takes three to five years of growth to bloom.

Cutting Propagation of Mayodendron igneum

Cutting propagation is generally not used for propagating Mayodendron igneum, because the survival rate of Mayodendron igneum propagated by this method is relatively low. To improve the survival rate of cutting propagation, we can use the vegetative propagation method; the air layering method can effectively improve the survival rate of Mayodendron igneum cutting propagation, and Mayodendron igneum propagated by this method is generally used for pot cultivation.

Mayodendron igneum successfully propagated by this method generally blooms in one or two years.

Cultivation Methods for Mayodendron igneum

Soil

Mayodendron igneum likes soil with a deep and fertile layer, preferably neutral or slightly acidic soil with good drainage; it can tolerate poor soil, and a certain amount of base fertilizer needs to be applied at planting time.

Light and Temperature

Mayodendron igneum likes light and prefers a warm growing environment. Mayodendron igneum can tolerate heat but not cold; the suitable temperature for growth is between 23°C-30°C. In winter it can tolerate high temperatures of around 0°C, but it cannot remain in a low-temperature state for a long time, as this will cause frost damage to the plant. Generally, when cultivating Mayodendron igneum in China, it can be planted in the open ground in South China, while in other regions it needs to be potted in winter and moved indoors for care. Mayodendron igneum likes a growing environment with sufficient sunlight and will grow well only with sufficient light, but it can also tolerate partial shade.

Watering and Fertilizing

Mayodendron igneum has low requirements for water and fertilizer. During the growing period, attention should be paid to timely replenishment of water, especially during high temperature and drought, attention should be paid to replenishing water. Fertilizing should be carried out according to the fertility of the soil; during the growing period, fertilizer should be supplemented appropriately, mainly by light and frequent applications, with 3-5 applications per year; more nitrogen fertilizer can be applied, and in autumn phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be added.
