An Introduction to the Characteristics and Farming Management of Live Bullfrogs from Taiwan, China
Live bullfrogs from Taiwan, China generally refer to bullfrogs farmed in the Taiwan region and supplied to the market while still alive or kept for further farming. The bullfrog is native to North America and gets its name from its loud, cow-like call. It is a common edible frog with the characteristics of being large in size, fast-growing and fairly adaptable.
Live bullfrogs have tender, fine-textured meat and a delicious flavor, with a relatively high protein content and little fat, making them popular with many consumers. Being traded live helps keep them fresh, so there is fairly stable demand in the restaurant and aquatic products markets. When choosing them, check whether the frogs are lively, whether the body surface is smooth and intact, and whether there are any signs of injury or disease.
As for farming, bullfrogs prefer a warm, humid environment. In daily management, the water should be kept clean, the water temperature kept relatively stable, and the stocking density reasonably controlled, with specialized compound feed or animal-based bait provided. At the same time, escape-prevention facilities should be well built and daily inspections strengthened. Common diseases such as gastroenteritis and red-leg disease need to be detected and dealt with early to reduce losses.
When the temperature drops, bullfrogs noticeably reduce their feeding and activity and enter a semi-dormant state. During overwintering, attention should be paid to keeping them warm, appropriately deepening the water level, and reducing disturbance and feeding, to help the frogs get through the winter safely and lay a good foundation for resuming growth the following year.
