Feeding and Management of Bullfrogs

As a very common dish on our tables today, bullfrogs are welcomed by many people. The bullfrog is an edible frog species; its meat is very tender, smooth and refreshing in taste, and it also has considerable medicinal value. Not only in China, but all over the world, it is the most important farmed frog species. Bullfrog farming has already become a main farming project for many people, but with so many growth stages of the bullfrog, how should it be managed? Let's take a look together below!

1. Tadpole Management

Tadpoles are the earliest form of the bullfrog. When managing tadpoles, inspection work must be done regularly to observe the tadpoles' activity and feeding conditions, and then records should be kept. Control the temperature and depth of the breeding pond water well, manage water quality, and ensure the water is clean and clear. Do a good job in disease prevention for the tadpoles. Strengthen feed management, and take timely corresponding measures for abnormal conditions of the tadpoles. Among these, the more serious one is floating at the surface, which indicates insufficient dissolved oxygen or excessive oxygen; adjust the dissolved oxygen content in the breeding pond in time.

2. Juvenile Frog Management

Juvenile frogs are the basic form after tadpoles successfully metamorphose into frogs. At this time, the juvenile frogs' bodies are very weak, and their resistance is not strong. If management is poor, various diseases are very likely to occur. For feed during the juvenile frog stage, a small amount of meat food can be fed, such as dried silkworm pupae and animal offal, but attention should be paid to the feeding amount; too much must not be fed, causing the juvenile frogs to eat too full, which is not conducive to nutrient absorption and later digestion. For the growth of juvenile frogs, temperature and humidity should be well controlled, classification measures should be done well, and the prevention and control of natural enemies and diseases is the most important. If overwintering is to be carried out, its overwintering management is also the primary task.

3. Adult Frog Management

As juvenile frogs grow, their body size also becomes larger and larger. At this time, we should reasonably regulate the breeding density according to the adult frogs' body size and weight, and the breeding density is usually about 30 frogs per sq m. After reaching the adult frog stage, the bullfrog's growth capacity strengthens and it becomes more and more energetic, and its jumping ability gradually improves. Therefore, we should do a good job in anti-escape measures around the breeding pond, raise the height of the enclosure wall, and prevent adult frogs from jumping out of the breeding pond. The suitable temperature for adult frog growth is about 25°C. While controlling water temperature, also do a good job in sunshade and shading work in summer to prevent direct sunlight from burning the bullfrog's skin. The time when adult frogs reach the spawning period has a great relationship with weather changes. Generally, spawning begins on sunny mornings at 22°C and above.

4. Parent Frog Management

Parent frogs are frogs selected from adult frogs with strong growth capacity to be kept as breeding stock. Parent frogs are generally large in size and high in weight. Moreover, the reproduction and growth of parent frogs require a very large space, so when managing parent frogs, the number per sq m must not exceed two. Parent frog reproduction requires a large amount of nutrition, and the daily food intake will exceed at least 1/10 of body weight, and the bait's nutrition must be comprehensive. Since parent frogs are used for spawning and reproduction, the growth environment of parent frogs must not only be suitable for the growth of the parent frogs, but also ensure smooth egg hatching. The water temperature should be around 25°C, and the water level must not exceed 35 cm, so as to improve the hatching rate of frog eggs.

The above are the different feeding and management practices for each stage of the bullfrog. Although the bullfrog's growth stages are far more than these, the above four are relatively important periods in the bullfrog's growth. Everyone must strengthen management, and special attention should be paid to parent frogs, because whether the management of parent frogs is successful is closely related to whether continuous efficient bullfrog farming can be maintained.
