Overwintering Breeding Techniques for Bullfrogs

Since bullfrogs are poikilothermic animals, they begin hibernation when the water temperature drops to 6-12°C. To ensure the economic benefits of bullfrog farming, the following aspects of management during the hibernation period should be noted.

Maintaining Body Fat

After bullfrogs enter hibernation, they hide at the bottom of the water or in burrows without feeding, relying on skin respiration to absorb dissolved oxygen from the water and on nutrients accumulated in the body to sustain weak metabolism. Therefore, before hibernation, it is important to focus on maintaining body fat. A sufficient amount of highly nutritious and well-balanced feed should be provided daily. If conditions permit, some fly maggots and loaches can be added to ensure the bullfrogs eat well and are well-fed, so as to accumulate the nutrients needed for hibernation, reduce mortality, and ensure breeding benefits.

Sheltering from Wind

For bullfrogs to overwinter in burrows, burrows should be dug in leeward and sunny locations. The size of the burrows depends on the scale of breeding; generally, the diameter is 15 cm, the depth is more than 1 m, and the length is variable. The burrows should be moist but not flooded by pond water, and a windbreak barrier should also be set up. In addition, throughout the hibernation period, strict precautions should be taken against rat intrusion.

Preventing Frostbite

During the overwintering period, a 2 cm water layer must be maintained in the frog pond, and a frame should be set up above the water surface to prevent frost. Bamboo strips can be used to make a semicircular frame above the pond, covered with straw curtains or plastic film. When the air temperature is above 6°C, part of the plastic film should be lifted to facilitate ventilation and regulate the temperature inside the frame. At the same time, the freshness of the pond water and the stability of the water level should be checked regularly.
