Introduction to the Breed Characteristics and Farming Value of Laiwu Black Pigs
The Laiwu black pig is a local pig breed native to the Laiwu area of Shandong Province, belonging to the North China type of black pigs. It has a long history of rearing and is one of China's important livestock and poultry genetic resources. Its whole body is covered with black hair, it has a medium body size and a sturdy constitution, with large drooping ears, and it has long adapted to the local climate and farm household rearing conditions.
The most outstanding advantage of this pig breed is its meat quality. Laiwu black pork has a relatively high intramuscular fat content, a rosy red meat color and clearly defined marbling, and when cooked it has a rich aroma and a tender, juicy texture, and it is often regarded as a representative of high-quality black pork. At the same time, it is tolerant of coarse feed and can make good use of green roughage and agricultural by-products, and its adaptability and disease resistance are also relatively strong.
Compared with introduced lean-type breeds, the Laiwu black pig grows more slowly, has a lower lean meat percentage and a long fattening cycle, and its farming cost is relatively high, which is also a common trait of most local pig breeds. Therefore, in production it is often used as a crossbreeding dam, crossed with introduced breeds, to appropriately improve growth performance while retaining the meat quality advantages.
When farming Laiwu black pigs, the diet can be reasonably formulated according to their tolerance of coarse feed, keeping the pens well ventilated and dry and providing appropriate space for activity; adopting ecological free-range or semi-free-range methods can better bring out the meat quality advantages. At present, this breed has been included in local livestock and poultry genetic resource protection, and through conservation breeding and brand development, its market recognition is gradually increasing.
