Lingzhi (Ganoderma) is a well-known medicinal fungus that can be collected in the wild or cultivated artificially. Artificial cultivation of lingzhi has relatively high environmental requirements; only when temperature, humidity, light, ventilation and the growing substrate all work together can the mycelium grow normally and produce mushrooms successfully.

In terms of temperature, lingzhi is a heat-loving fungus. The suitable temperature for mycelial growth is roughly around 25 degrees Celsius, while the fruiting body formation and development stage prefers relatively higher and more stable temperatures. Too low a temperature leads to slow growth or even stagnation, and too large a temperature difference can easily trigger deformed mushrooms.

Humidity is also crucial. The substrate needs to maintain a relatively high water content, and during the fruiting period the relative air humidity must be noticeably high so that the caps can open normally. When adding water, misting is preferable, to avoid heavy pouring that causes waterlogging in the substrate and rot of the fungus.

Light and ventilation must not be overlooked either. During the mycelial growth stage, the fungus is not sensitive to light and can be grown under weaker light; once it enters the fruiting stage, a moderate amount of scattered light is needed to promote thicker caps and normal colour. At the same time, lingzhi has a strong demand for air, so the cultivation site must be ventilated and aired frequently to prevent excessively high carbon dioxide concentrations from causing thin, elongated stipes and small caps.

For the substrate, materials rich in woody fibre such as hardwood sawdust and log segments can be chosen. In daily management, attention must also be paid to preventing contamination by weed fungi and insect pests, and keeping the cultivation environment clean, so that lingzhi can grow healthily with good quality.
