Indica rice is a subspecies of Asian cultivated rice, as opposed to japonica rice, and is mainly distributed in the low-latitude, low-altitude, hot and humid regions of southern China. Its grains are generally rather slender, and when the rice is cooked the grains absorb a lot of water and swell greatly, giving the cooked rice a looser texture and lower stickiness. In appearance, indica rice has good translucency, and it is the staple food grain in many parts of southern China.

In terms of growth habits, indica rice likes warmth and moisture and has strong heat tolerance, but it is not tolerant of low temperatures; a cold wave during the seedling-raising period can easily cause seedling rot, and low temperatures at the heading and flowering stage may lead to poor grain filling. According to the length of the growth period, indica rice is usually divided into three types: early indica, medium indica and late indica. Early indica has a shorter growth period and is suitable for planting in combination in double-cropping rice areas, while medium indica and late indica are more common in the Yangtze River basin and areas to the south.

There are many indica rice varieties in production, and each region has its own main varieties suited to the local climate, such as early indica types like Jiayu 948, Tianhe No. 1 and Shaojia No. 1, as well as new indica rice varieties such as Hongliangyou 166. When choosing seeds, one should generally take into account the local light and temperature conditions, cropping schedule and market demand, giving priority to types with stable yields, good grain quality and relatively strong disease resistance.

Indica rice has fairly diverse uses; besides being cooked directly as rice, it is also often used to process rice flour, rice noodles, rice cakes and alcoholic beverages and other products. When growing indica rice, one should sow and raise seedlings at the right time to prevent cold damage, achieve a rational dense planting and scientific fertilization, and strengthen the monitoring and control of diseases and pests such as rice blast and rice planthopper, so as to obtain a better harvest.
