The bearded dragon is a lizard native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. It gets its name from the spiny scales along its lower jaw and throat, which puff up when it is startled or displaying, making it look as if it has a beard. It is active during the day, has a relatively gentle temperament and a sturdy build, and is one of the most popular pet lizards in the world.

An adult bearded dragon, including its tail, is often more than forty cm long, with a flattened body and powerful limbs, and it likes to lie on rocks or branches to bask in the sun. It makes interesting communication gestures such as waving and head bobbing, and once it is familiar with its owner it interacts fairly well, which is why it is often regarded as a good introductory reptile pet.

The genus Pogona contains several species; the central bearded dragon is the most common on the pet market. Through artificial selective breeding, morphs such as leatherback and scaleless have also appeared, with body colors ranging from red to orange to yellow and more. When choosing an individual, it is best to pick one with bright eyes, a full body and good alertness.

Keeping a bearded dragon in captivity requires a dry, warm environment; a basking hotspot should be set up to create a temperature gradient, and a UV lamp should be provided to help with calcium absorption and prevent metabolic bone disease. As for food, they are somewhat omnivorous; juveniles feed mainly on insects, while adults should have a higher proportion of vegetables and plant matter, and clean drinking water should always be available.

Common problems during keeping include skeletal deformities caused by calcium deficiency, intestinal blockage from accidentally swallowing substrate, and respiratory discomfort caused by improper temperature and humidity. As long as the environment is stable and feeding is appropriate, a bearded dragon can usually live to around ten years. Before getting one, it is advisable to first learn the local regulations on keeping exotic pets, and to prepare temperature-control and lighting equipment in advance.
