The benefits and effects of goji berries are reflected in several aspects.
Goji berries are the dried, ripe fruit of the goji plant (Lycium barbarum, Solanaceae). The main producing areas are concentrated in the northwestern regions such as Ningxia, Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang, so the place of origin is often used on the market as a reference for judging quality. The berries are small, reddish and sweet, and are a common food-and-medicine ingredient, usually used to steep in water, make soup, cook congee or prepare stews.
In traditional food-therapy thinking, goji berries are often regarded as having the effect of nourishing the liver and kidneys and benefiting essence and eyesight, making them a choice for many people's daily health care. From a modern nutritional perspective, they contain components such as goji polysaccharides and carotenoids, though the actual effects of food ingredients still need to be viewed rationally and cannot replace proper medical treatment.
The ways to eat them are fairly flexible: clean goji berries can be chewed directly, or steeped in warm water and eaten together with the fruit, and they can also be added to soups, congee or desserts to enhance flavor. The amount used each time should not be too much; a small amount over the long term, taken in moderation, is more reliable. People with a hot constitution, who are prone to excess internal heat, or who are in the stage of a cold or fever are generally advised to eat less as appropriate.
When buying, check whether the fruit is dry, whether the berries are plump, and whether the color is natural; those with unusually bright colors or an off odor should be treated with caution. For storage, seal them and place them in a cool, dry place, taking care to prevent moisture and insect damage. Once they become damp, clump together or change flavor, they should no longer be eaten.
In addition, there are related varieties on the market such as black goji berries, whose appearance and composition differ slightly from red goji berries, but which likewise belong to the category of food ingredients. Whichever kind you choose, it should be treated as part of a balanced diet, not as a supplement to be pursued for quick results.
