Pruning jujube trees is an important technique in jujube cultivation and management. It refers to adjusting the branch structure by means of thinning, heading back, pinching and branch bending, so that the canopy is well ventilated and lets light through, keeping growth and fruiting in balance. Reasonable pruning can build a strong tree form and reduce the consumption of nutrients by useless branches, and it clearly helps to raise the fruit-setting rate and fruit quality.

Pruning time is generally divided into winter pruning and summer pruning. Winter pruning is mostly carried out during the dormant period from leaf fall to bud break, mainly dealing with large branches and adjusting the tree framework; summer pruning is carried out during the growing season and includes bud removal, pinching and thinning of overly dense new shoots, which can promptly control excessive vigor and improve the light inside the canopy.

The branches of the jujube tree are divided into jujube heads, secondary branches, jujube spurs and jujube bearing shoots, and they need to be treated differently when pruning. Young trees are mainly trained for shape, focusing on developing the trunk and main and secondary scaffold branches, commonly using forms such as the open-center layered shape or the natural open-center shape; bearing trees focus on maintaining tree vigor, and crossing branches, diseased and pest-damaged branches and overly dense branches should be removed in good time, with timely renewal of the fruiting branch groups; old trees can be rejuvenated by cutting back.

The pruning intensity should be moderate, to avoid removing too many branches at once, which would weaken the tree or stimulate excessive vegetative growth; the cut should be smooth to aid healing, and tools are best disinfected beforehand to prevent disease from spreading through the wounds. At the same time, pruning should be flexibly adjusted according to the local climate and tree age, and combined with fertilizer and water management afterwards, to achieve better results.
