Seedling-raising technique refers to a whole set of management methods for first growing seeds into strong seedlings before planting out or transplanting, and it is an important step in the cultivation of many crops such as vegetables, melons and fruits, and flowers. Compared with direct sowing, raising seedlings makes it easier to care for the young plants in a concentrated way, improves land use efficiency, and makes it easier to produce strong seedlings with uniform growth.

Common seedling-raising methods include seedbed raising, nutrient-pot raising and plug-tray raising; in large-scale production, plug trays combined with seedling substrate are mostly used, making management more standardized. For crops such as cucurbits, grafted seedling raising can also be used; some vegetatively propagated crops commonly use cutting propagation for seedlings, and the specific method can be chosen flexibly according to the crop type and production conditions.

During seedling raising, the key steps to focus on include seed treatment, temperature and humidity regulation, light management, and water and fertilizer supply. Soaking seeds to promote germination or disinfecting seeds before sowing helps reduce seedling-stage diseases; after emergence, timely ventilation and cooling and controlled watering can prevent seedlings from becoming leggy. Before planting out, hardening off should also be carried out so that the seedlings gradually adapt to the external environment, thereby increasing the transplant survival rate.

Common problems during the seedling stage include damping-off, Rhizoctonia rot, leggy seedlings and stunted seedlings, which are mostly related to imbalanced temperature and humidity, insufficient light or overly dense sowing, and need to be prevented by improving the environment and maintaining a reasonable density. Only by mastering seedling-raising techniques well can you grow seedlings with well-developed roots and thick stems, laying a good foundation for later growth, yield and quality.
