A Detailed Guide to Goose Farming Techniques: Scientific Breeding Methods from Brooding to Grazing
Goose farming techniques refer to a complete set of rearing methods built around breed selection, brooding management, grazing with supplementary feeding, and disease prevention and control. Geese are herbivorous waterfowl that tolerate coarse feed and can make extensive use of green fodder such as fresh grass and vegetable leaves, so the cost of raising them is relatively low. There are many local breeds in China, such as the Lion Head Goose, the Wanxi White Goose, and the Sichuan White Goose; when introducing stock, choose according to local climate conditions and market demand.
Brooding is the key stage determining success or failure in goose farming. After hatching, goslings have a weak ability to regulate body temperature, so warmth must be provided and dampness prevented, and they should be given their first drink and first feed at the right time. Temperature should be kept stable in the first few weeks, then gradually lowered and weaning off heat as the birds grow older. Stocking density during brooding should not be too high, and the litter must be kept dry, otherwise crushing and disease problems easily occur.
The growing goose stage is mainly based on grazing; the flock can be allowed to feed on pasture grass and field weeds, with a suitable supplement of grain or compound feed in the evening, which effectively reduces feed costs. Where grazing conditions are unavailable, geese can be kept in confinement, with forage grasses such as annual ryegrass and bitter lettuce grown to supply green feed, while ensuring clean drinking water and enough space for activity.
As for disease prevention, coop and equipment disinfection should be done routinely, vaccinations such as that against gosling plague should be given according to the immunization schedule, and sick geese should be isolated and handled promptly. Geese grow quickly, and goose meat, goose eggs, and goose down all have good market value; mastering scientific goose farming techniques helps raise the survival rate and overall farming returns.
