The Xiang pig is a small-bodied local pig breed with fragrant meat
The Xiang pig is a type of small local pig breed in China, named for its small build, thin skin, fine meat, and fragrant flavor. It is mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of Guizhou, Guangxi, and other places, and the Congjiang Xiang pig, Huanjiang Xiang pig, and Bama Xiang pig are relatively famous groups. This type of pig has long reproduced in mountainous environments, with strong adaptability and tolerance for coarse feed.
In terms of body size, the Xiang pig is noticeably smaller than ordinary domestic pigs, and its adult weight is usually only several tens of kilograms, making it an early-maturing breed with relatively slow growth. It has thin skin and fine bones, a relatively high proportion of lean meat, tender meat quality, and moderate intramuscular fat distribution. Whether eaten fresh or processed into cured meat, sausage, or roast suckling pig, its flavor is quite distinctive.
In terms of farming, Xiang pigs are suitable for free-range or semi-free-range raising. In daily feeding, more green and coarse feed such as grass and agricultural by-products can be used, with an appropriate supplement of concentrated feed. The pen should be dry and well ventilated, and sufficient activity space should be provided so that it can maintain a natural growth rhythm. Because its growth cycle is relatively long, it is more suitable for a specialty, high-quality farming route rather than high-density rapid fattening.
It should be noted that small Xiang pigs are often sold on the market as pets, claiming that they will not grow large, but in fact most Xiang pigs still reach several tens of kilograms as adults, so the site and investment should be considered clearly before raising them. In addition, as a precious local pig breed resource, the Xiang pig also has important significance in breed conservation and the development of specialty animal husbandry.
