Summer Black is a European-American hybrid grape originating from Japan. It is a triploid seedless variety, generally considered to be a cross between Kyoho and Thompson Seedless, and it is currently grown fairly widely in both northern and southern China. Its clusters are mostly conical, and the berries are nearly round. When ripe, the skin is purple-black with a relatively thick bloom, giving it a glossy black appearance that is highly recognizable in the market. Summer Black's most outstanding advantages are being seedless and early ripening; it usually matures and reaches the market earlier than Kyoho, accumulates sugar quickly, and has firm, crisp, juicy flesh with a distinct strawberry aroma, and it tastes good even when eaten with the skin. Its berries are rather small under natural growing conditions, so in production, plant growth regulators are often applied around the flowering period for seedlessness and berry enlargement, making the berries fuller and more uniform. In terms of cultivation, Summer Black has a rather vigorous vine that tends to grow excessively. Nitrogen fertilizer application needs to be reasonably controlled, shoot tipping and bud removal should be done in time, and attention should be paid to flower and fruit management, stabilizing cluster shape and quality through flower and fruit thinning. Its resistance to common fungal diseases is somewhat stronger than that of Vitis vinifera grapes, but in rainy areas, rain-shelter cultivation and drainage during the rainy season are still important, along with control of gray mold and other diseases, to ensure the marketability of the fruit. Overall, Summer Black ripens early, is seedless and richly flavored, making it one of the main early-ripening table grape varieties, and it is also very suitable for development in agritourism picking orchards. If growers can manage the two key stages of flowering-period management and berry enlargement well, the clusters will color well and have a full aroma, usually making it easier to achieve better growing returns.
