Mosquitoes are holometabolous insects, meaning they go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult. When people talk about a mosquito's lifespan, they usually mean how long the adult stage lasts. A mosquito's lifespan is not fixed; it varies noticeably depending on the species, sex and environment.

The lifespans of male and female mosquitoes differ greatly. Males feed on nectar and plant sap and generally live only about one to two weeks. Females need blood meals to obtain the nutrition required for laying eggs, and under suitable temperatures and good conditions they can usually live for several weeks or even longer. Females that are overwintering have a slower metabolism, and their lifespan is extended even further.

Environmental conditions have a considerable effect on mosquito lifespan. When temperatures are high, mosquitoes are very active and their metabolism speeds up, so their life cycle is relatively short. When temperatures are lower, development and metabolism slow down, and their survival time is correspondingly longer. In addition, factors such as humidity, water sources and natural enemies also influence whether mosquitoes survive.

Common Culex, Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes each have their own characteristics in terms of lifespan and habits, and Aedes mosquitoes are the main species that transmit dengue fever. If you want to shorten mosquito lifespans and control their numbers, the most effective method is to eliminate standing water, because mosquito eggs and wrigglers cannot survive without water. Promptly clearing standing water from flower pot saucers, buckets, old tires and other containers after rain, combined with window screens, screen doors and mosquito-repellent plants, can significantly reduce the mosquitoes around you.
