How Long Do Mosquitoes Live?

How long do mosquitoes live? Under natural conditions, male mosquitoes die about 7-10 days after mating, while female mosquitoes generally live 1 to 2 months. The life cycle of a mosquito can be divided into four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Let's take a look together below!

Depending on the species, mosquito eggs may be laid in three different locations: on the water surface, at the water's edge or in the water. Those on the water surface include Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes, while those at the water's edge include Aedes mosquitoes. Anopheles and Culex eggs hatch in about 2 days, while Aedes eggs take 3 to 5 days.

Mosquito larvae are called wrigglers. They feed on bacteria and single-celled algae in the water. The larval stage of mosquitoes lasts 10 to 14 days before they enter the pupal stage.

From the side, the mosquito pupa looks like a bean speck. It does not feed, but it can move through the water and breathes through its first pair of respiratory horns. It reaches full maturity after 2 days.

Newly emerged mosquitoes cannot fly before their wings have fully expanded. From adult emergence to blood feeding and egg laying takes about 3-7 days.
