Wangba is the common name for the soft-shell turtle, also called jinyu or tuanyu in some places, and in a broad sense it is sometimes used to refer to turtles and soft-shell turtles in general. They are omnivorous animals, but they favor animal-based food, and exactly what they eat varies with their growth stage and environmental conditions.

In the wild, soft-shell turtles mainly prey on small fish, small shrimp, snails and mussels, aquatic insects and earthworms, and they also eat some aquatic plants and algae. Young individuals have small mouths and mostly feed on tiny prey such as water fleas and small insects; as they grow, their hunting ability increases and their food range broadens accordingly.

Under artificial farming conditions, soft-shell turtles are often fed fresh fish, snail meat, animal offal and specialized compound feed, and adding a suitable amount of plant-based feed can make the nutrition more balanced. When keeping a small number at home, you can feed small fish and shrimp, lean meat and commercially available turtle and soft-shell turtle feed; the food should be small enough to swallow easily, and you should avoid feeding too much at one time.

When feeding, also pay attention to the effect of water temperature. When the water temperature is higher, soft-shell turtles have a strong appetite, and you can feed them according to the principles of fixed time, fixed amount and fixed location; after the water temperature drops noticeably, their food intake decreases accordingly, and around the onset of winter they basically stop eating and enter hibernation. At this point there is no need to force feeding, so as to avoid leftover bait fouling the water quality.

Most common problems are related to improper feeding; for example, feeding only a single kind of food over the long term easily leads to malnutrition, while feeding spoiled food or leaving too much leftover bait may cause digestive problems and affect water quality. As long as the food is kept fresh, there is a mix of meat and vegetables, the feeding amount is moderate, and good water quality management is maintained, soft-shell turtles will generally grow relatively smoothly.
