2018 First Taiwan School Lunch Competition in Taipei
The "2018 First Taiwan School Lunch Competition," organized by the preparatory office of the Taiwan Food Education Association and the Fubon Cultural and Educational Foundation's School Lunch 22 Special Project, will be grandly held from October 20 (Saturday) to 21 (Sunday), 2018, at the private Yuda Commercial Vocational High School in Taipei.
This competition, the first nationwide school lunch contest in the country organized by civilians, has a total of 24 school dietitians and chefs from 12 teams from New Taipei, Taoyuan, Yilan, Taichung, Changhua, Tainan, and Kaohsiung entering the final round, competing for the 2018 Best School Lunch championship. The finals are divided into a competition group and a presentation group. Participants must complete six servings of school lunch within the 90-minute "cooking practicum" competition time, and the competition group must additionally conduct a five-minute "food education teaching" session.
This competition has also carefully arranged a panel of 11 domestic and international experts from different professional fields, including renowned host Zhang Xiaoyan, Sheng Zhiren, general manager of Taiwan's only Michelin three-star dining group, Mr. Bajo Renjo, founder of the "Japan National School Lunch Koshien" who came from Tokyo to serve as an international judge, two upper-grade elementary school students selected through an essay competition, scholars long engaged in nutrition education work, and representatives from the school lunch supervisory agencies the Ministry of Education and the Council of Agriculture. By bringing together different perspectives, they will select a school lunch that balances food safety, nutritional balance, visual appeal, and rich local culinary cultural characteristics.
This competition draws on the "Japan National School Lunch Koshien," which is already in its thirteenth year and has attracted widespread attention from all sectors. Its main purpose is to highlight the importance of the professional abilities of school dietitians and kitchen staff, improve overall campus meal service quality, and implement food and agriculture education. It is hoped that through this nationwide competition, cross-county and international exchange and learning opportunities for practitioners will be revitalized, making the more than 1.7 million lunches served daily on campuses across Taiwan the most important source of nutritional vitality for students and teachers nationwide at school.
